Zanzibar records positive balance of trade in June 2022

Zanzibar’s export and import trade sector recorded a balance in both volumes and value in during the month of June of this year, as economic activity increased as compared to the previous month.

According to the latest Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Monthly Economic Review for June released recently, the exports of goods and services in Zanzibar increased to $228.2 million from $109.3 million recorded in the June last year.

“This was largely attributed to an increase in cloves export and tourism receipts, “the report said

Service receipts increased by 66.4 per cent to $139.7 million, while cloves export rose to$ 62.8 million, from $1 million recorded in the corresponding period last year’

“On month-to-month basis, goods exports rose to $1.5 million in June 2022 compared to $0.9 million in June 2021

In a related development, the value of imports of goods and services rose to $ 491.2 million, from

$391.9 million recorded in June 2021, largely due to increase in imports of intermediate goods.

Intermediate goods imports rose to $304.6 million from $ 173.7 million, with much of the increase registered in industrial supplies, white petroleum products, edible oil and wheat. T

“The rise in imports of Consumer goods was recorded in food and beverage for household consumption and other consumer good categories,” the BoT Monthly review noted.
