Uber, Tigo Tanzania partner in new cashback initiative for drivers and riders

Ride hailing company Uber has entered a one-year partnership deal with telecommunications firm Tigo Tanzania that seeks to roll out a series of cashback initiatives for drivers and riders who use Uber app.

Speaking during an event to announce the partnership held in Dar es Salaam today, the Uber Head of East Africa, Imran Manji said the duos’ partnership is an important milestone that seeks to provide seamless and convenient payment  solutions for the be unbanked and  underserved  people in the country’s formal financial systems.

“We are excited to announce this partnership with Tigo that offers diverse savings benefits for drivers and riders on the Uber platform. Technology is changing so fast so as a company, we are committed to rolling out more sustainable solutions that suit our client’s needs,” Manji said.

The Uber Tanzania Head of Operations Monica Mziray said under the new partnership, riders will be able to save on costs and drivers will have the opportunity to increase their earnings.

She noted that drivers on the Uber platform have the option of being registered by Tigo Pesa as ‘Lipa Kwa Simu’ merchants to enable them to collect funds from the riders that use other telecommunication networks.

“The partnership will give Uber drivers an opportunity to cash out from their Lipa Kwa Simu merchant accounts with zero charges through diverse Tigo Pesa agents for any amount below 500,000/- per day,” she said.

Mziray added, “This partnership comes with a lot of benefits. Uber drivers  will receive 10% cashback in their Tigo Pesa wallets in addition to other periodic promotions that uber may run through the app. Drivers who collect funds using thei Lipa Lwa Simu merchant accounts will get a commission of 20% of the transactional fees for fares paid by riders,”

The Tigo Pesa Chief Officer Angelica Pesha during the event said “The partnership with Uber further cements Tigo Pesa’s ambitious goal in ensuring a cashless society in Tanzania.

“Uber drivers will now have an efficient payment collection solution that will ensure that their customers have a safe and secure method to pay for their journey from one place to another. Additionally, this collaboration underscores Lipa Kwa Simu as an effective payment solution and we are optimistic that this will take their small business to the next level.” She said.
