Tanzania’s inflation rate drops to 4.3 pct in April, 2023

Tanzania’s Annual Headline Inflation Rate for the month of April, 2023 dropped to 4.3 percent from 4.7 percent recorded for the month of March, 2023 according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The decrease of the headline inflation explains that, the speed of price change for commodities for the year ended April, 2023 has decreased compared to the speed that was recorded for the year ended March, 2023.

“The overall index went up from 107.88 recorded in April, 2022 to 112.54 in April, 2023,” NBS said in a statement.

Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for April, 2023 decreased to 9.1 percent from 9.7 percent that was recorded in March, 2023.

The Annual Inflation Rate for all items without food and non-alcoholic beverages for April, 2023 also decreased to 2.3 percent from 2.7 percent that was recorded in March, 2023.

The National Consumer Price Index between March 2023 and April 2023 increased by 0.4percent.

The increase of the overall index is attributed to price increase for some food and nonfood items.

 Some food items that contributed to an increase of the index include; wheat grain by 1.1 percent, sorghum grains by 4.7 percent, finger millet grains by 3.5 percent, maize flour by 1.5 percent, pasta products/spaghetti by 1.1 percent, fresh fish by 1.1 percent, dried sardines by 3.3 percent, fruits by 0.5 percent, groundnuts by 0.6 percent, vegetables by 1.4 percent, round potatoes by 2.5 percent, fresh cassava by 3.6 percent, cocoyams by 4.6 percent, cooking bananas by 4.4 percent, dried beans by 1.1 percent, dried peas by 4.5 percent, dried cowpeas by 1.8 percent, dry cassava by 7.0 percent and alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 0.5 percent.

On the other hand, some non-food items that contributed to an increase of the index include; garments for men by 0.3 percent, garments for women by 0.7 percent, garments for children by 0.3 percent, footwear for men by 0.3 percent, footwear for women by 0.3 percent, firewood by 4.5, charcoal by 1.9 percent, beds by 0.7 percent, loose carpets by 0.4 percent, food and beverage serving services by 0.4 percent and personal care by 0.4 percent.
