TANGA — Mixx by Yas is expanding its involvement in Tanzania’s agricultural value chains through support for cooperatives in Tanga, combining digital financial services with equipment aimed at improving the collection and movement of agricultural products.
Through its Vuna na Mixx campaign, the mobile financial services company provided a motorcycle and freezer to the Tanga Dairy Cooperative Union (TDCU) to support milk collection and marketing. It also provided a transport cart to Tanga Rural Cooperative Union (TARECU) for moving crops from farms to collection centres.
TARECU works with producers of crops including cocoa, sesame, pigeon peas and cashews, while TDCU works within the dairy value chain.
Mixx by Yas said the initiative is intended to connect digital payments and financial services with the practical needs of farmers and cooperatives, rather than limiting digital finance to payment transactions.
Suleiman Asilia Khamis, the company’s Manager for Business and Government Relations, said the objective is to improve efficiency throughout the agricultural value chain, from production and collection through to payment.
The initiative reflects a wider push to increase the use of digital financial services in agriculture, where payment systems, transportation and collection infrastructure can influence how efficiently produce reaches markets.
Tanga’s cooperative network provides an important link between farmers and buyers, making improvements in collection and transport relevant to both producers and agricultural businesses.
For Mixx by Yas, the programme also creates a pathway for expanding the use of digital financial services among farmers and cooperative organisations.
The company said its longer-term objective is to become a partner to farmers throughout the value chain, while strengthening cooperatives and supporting a more digitally connected agricultural economy.
