Tanzanian investors accounted for 93.78 percent of share purchases on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange during the third quarter of 2026, highlighting the growing role of domestic capital in the country’s equity market.
DSE data shows that investors purchased shares worth about TZS 803.8 billion between July and September, with domestic investors responsible for the overwhelming majority of the buying.
Foreign investors accounted for 6.22 percent of purchases during the quarter.
The shift towards domestic participation reflects the increasing accessibility of Tanzania’s capital markets, with digital platforms making it easier for individuals to participate in share trading.
However, the growing investor base has also increased the importance of financial education and investor protection.
Vertex International Securities CEO Ahmed Nganya urged investors to confirm that investment companies and service providers are licensed by the Capital Markets and Securities Authority before committing funds.
He also warned investors to be cautious of offers promising unusually high or guaranteed returns.
Tanzania Stock Exchange Brokers Association company secretary Fausta Daniel said social media had become an important source of investment information for younger investors, while stressing the need to distinguish reliable information from fraudulent offers.
The figures indicate a significant opportunity for Tanzania’s capital market as more domestic savings move into productive investments.
For the DSE, sustained local participation could provide a stronger domestic investor base and reduce dependence on foreign portfolio flows.
At the same time, investor education and confidence will be increasingly important as participation expands, particularly among first-time and younger investors.
