Tanzania’s Tourism Boom Faces a New Test: Can Local Businesses Capture More Spending?

DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania’s growing tourism earnings are creating opportunities for businesses across the economy, but the next challenge is ensuring that more visitor spending translates into revenue for local suppliers, service providers and communities.

Tourism earnings reached US4.41 billion in 2025, compared with US3.90 billion in 2024, while international tourist arrivals increased to approximately 2.29 million from 2.14 million a year earlier. Average expenditure per visitor per night also rose to US$289, signalling that tourism growth is being supported by higher spending as well as increased arrivals.

For Tanzanian businesses, these figures point to opportunities beyond traditional tour operations and large hotels. Local food producers, transport companies, restaurants, cultural enterprises, craft makers and smaller accommodation providers can all benefit when visitor demand connects more directly with domestic businesses.

One opportunity lies in strengthening local supply chains. Hotels and restaurants that source more produce, seafood, furniture, textiles and other goods from Tanzanian suppliers can create additional business for domestic producers while offering visitors a stronger connection to local products and experiences.

Small businesses can also benefit from the growing demand for experiences beyond accommodation and wildlife safaris. Cultural tours, community-based tourism, local cuisine, heritage sites and guided excursions can help broaden the range of services available to visitors while spreading spending across more destinations.

However, capturing this market requires businesses to meet expectations around quality, reliability, pricing, customer service and digital visibility. Smaller operators may also need better access to finance, training, formal tourism networks and partnerships with established tour companies and hotels.

The opportunity is therefore not just to attract more tourists, but to build stronger links between tourism spending and Tanzania’s wider business economy.

As visitor numbers and expenditure grow, the ability of local enterprises to supply tourism businesses, develop distinctive experiences and reach international customers will help determine how widely the sector’s economic benefits are shared.
