DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania has reaffirmed its intention to deepen economic cooperation with China through the Belt and Road Initiative, with transport, energy, communications and industrial development among the areas highlighted.
The message was delivered at a Belt and Road Initiative forum in Nairobi, held alongside the Financial Street Forum annual meeting. Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance said the cooperation was intended to support investment, infrastructure development and broader economic activity.
The ministry also highlighted cooperation involving the Tanzania–Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), with Tanzania, Zambia and China working on plans to rehabilitate and improve the railway through a public-private partnership arrangement.
For businesses, improved regional transport links could eventually support the movement of goods, reduce logistical constraints and strengthen connections between Tanzania and markets in southern Africa. Infrastructure projects can also create demand for construction, engineering, logistics and maintenance services.
However, the announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation that every proposed project is fully financed or ready for construction. The terms, timelines and implementation arrangements of individual projects remain important.
The business impact will depend on how cooperation is translated into funded projects, reliable infrastructure and opportunities for local companies to participate in procurement and supply chains.
