DAR ES SALAAM — The Tanzania National Roads Agency is verifying compensation records for property owners affected by the planned upgrade of Nelson Mandela Road, ahead of the fifth phase of Dar es Salaam’s Bus Rapid Transit project.
The proposed corridor is expected to connect the Ubungo area near Kijazi Junction with Kurasini and the port. The project is intended to improve public transport access and ease congestion along an important urban and commercial route.
According to the agency, compensation documentation is being checked so payments can proceed. The procurement process for a construction contractor was still under way when the report was published, and a contractor had not yet been selected.
The project has potential implications for businesses that depend on movement between the city, industrial areas and the port. Better public transport and road connectivity can help workers reach employment, improve access to commercial districts and support cargo-related activity.
At the same time, construction can create temporary disruption for roadside businesses, commuters and freight operators. Property owners and businesses operating near the corridor will need to pay attention to official notices, access arrangements and project updates.
The project’s timeline and benefits will depend on compensation processes, procurement and implementation. The current verification stage is a step in project preparation, not confirmation that construction has already begun.
