Tanzania’s Mining Supply Chain Offers a TZS5.1 Trillion Market for Local Businesses

BAGAMOYO — Tanzania’s mining sector presents a substantial procurement opportunity for domestic businesses, with the government urging more local companies to compete for contracts supplying mining operations.

Minerals Minister Anthony Mavunde highlighted a reported TZS5.1 trillion mining procurement market during the inauguration of a wire-mesh manufacturing plant operated by Geofields Tanzania Limited in Kerege, Bagamoyo District.

The facility has an annual production capacity of more than 100,000 wire-mesh panels used in underground mining support. Domestic production could help meet part of mining operators’ demand for specialised materials while building local manufacturing capability.

For Tanzanian businesses, the opportunity extends beyond manufacturing. Suppliers may be able to provide transport, maintenance, engineering, protective equipment, packaging and other services required by mines and their contractors.

However, entering the mining supply chain can require substantial preparation. Companies may need to meet technical specifications, demonstrate consistent quality, satisfy safety requirements and maintain enough working capital to fulfil large orders.

The development illustrates how industrial investment can connect with the wider domestic economy. Expanding local participation will depend on whether Tanzanian firms can deliver products and services that meet buyers’ requirements on quality, price, reliability and scale.
