Tree Regeneration Offers Bahi Farmers a Potential Route to Better Maize Harvests

BAHI, DODOMA — Farmers in Bahi District say allowing trees to regenerate naturally on their land has helped improve soil conditions, water retention and maize production, highlighting the potential links between land restoration and agricultural productivity.

Farmers involved in the Kisiki Hai programme reported improvements after adopting natural tree regeneration practices. One farmer described an increase from six sacks harvested on a two-acre plot to as many as 15 sacks per acre following the changes.

The reported experiences suggest that restoring vegetation may help some farms retain moisture and improve soil fertility. Fallen leaves can add organic matter to the soil, while trees can provide shade and other benefits to farming households.

For agribusinesses, improved productivity could affect demand for agricultural services, storage, processing and transport. However, the results described by individual farmers should not be treated as a guarantee that the same yield gains will occur on every farm.

Outcomes depend on soil conditions, rainfall, crop management, tree species and how trees are integrated with cultivation. Farmers considering new practices may benefit from local agricultural advice and monitoring results over multiple seasons.

The wider lesson is that agricultural productivity depends not only on seed and fertiliser inputs but also on the condition of the land and the resilience of farming systems.
