Cement production in Tanzania increased by 14.9 per cent to 7,598,073 tons last year from 6,614,359 tons reported in 2021 according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
According to the statistics body, during January to December 2022, cement consumption increased to 7,532,173 tons, up from 6,863,004 in 2021 being an increase of 669,168 tons equivalent to 9.8 percent.
“Cement consumption as an indicator translates into expansion/contraction of construction activities in the country,” the NBS report shows.
External trade data show cement exports in 2022 increased to 632,726 tons, up from 441,828 tons in 2021 which being an increase of 190,898 tons equivalent to 43.2 percent.
Cement imports however during the period under review decreased to 566,826 tons, down from 690,474 tons in 2021 which is less by 123,648 tons equivalent to 17.9 per cent.
“Decrease in cement imports is attributable to import substitution in cement industry,” the report said.
