ARUSHA — NMB Bank and the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) are working with young technology innovators to develop digital solutions aimed at improving farmers’ access to financial services and agricultural productivity.
The initiative, the AgriFin Hackathon 2026, is bringing together 20 innovators with backgrounds in data science, artificial intelligence and computer science at NM-AIST’s ICT Centre in Arusha.
Running from September 21 to 25, the programme is designed to move beyond theoretical technology development by having participants work on practical challenges facing Tanzania’s agricultural sector.
NMB Headquarters Human Resources Manager Joanitha Rwegasira Mrengo said the initiative is intended to connect academic knowledge with solutions that can be applied to real business and agricultural challenges.
The programme also brings banking and technology expertise into the development process, with NMB specialists expected to assess and help refine the systems produced by participants.
For NM-AIST, the initiative provides an opportunity to strengthen the link between research, technology and commercial applications.
Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Research and Innovation, Prof. Mwemezi Rwiza, said participants would receive training and mentorship in areas including AI, cybersecurity and agribusiness, while working alongside industry professionals.
The collaboration comes as financial institutions increasingly explore technology as a way of extending financial services to businesses and individuals operating in sectors where traditional access can be more difficult.
For the banking industry, technologies capable of improving how agricultural businesses access financial services could support more efficient lending, financial management and engagement with customers across the agricultural value chain.
The five-day programme will conclude on September 25, when participants are expected to present their solutions to a panel of judges. Some winners are also expected to receive opportunities to further develop their innovations internationally, including in South Korea.
The partnership between NMB and NM-AIST reflects a broader push to connect Tanzania’s technology talent with financial institutions and economic sectors where digital innovation could have practical commercial applications.
