DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania’s Gabriel Geay has turned a podium finish at one of the world’s major marathons into a financial windfall, earning €10,000 (more than TZS 30 million) after finishing third at the 2026 Berlin Marathon.

Geay crossed the finish line in 2:03:59, behind Ethiopia’s Guye Adola, who won in 2:02:50, and fellow Ethiopian Gemechu Dida, who finished second in 2:03:19.

The prize gives Geay more than a strong result on his sporting record. The TZS 30 million-plus payout could provide an opportunity to strengthen his financial position and invest in his career beyond a single race.

For a professional athlete, prize earnings can potentially be directed towards training and competition costs, coaching, travel, equipment and other expenses required to compete internationally. Longer-term financial planning could also help turn irregular sporting income into greater financial stability after an athlete’s competitive career.

Geay’s result also demonstrates the financial opportunities available at the highest level of international athletics. The official Berlin Marathon prize structure awards €30,000 to the winner, €15,000 to second place and €10,000 to third place, with additional bonuses available for qualifying performances.

The Tanzanian’s performance therefore carries significance beyond the podium. It adds another source of income to an athletic career that depends heavily on international competition and creates an opportunity for Geay to use the proceeds to support both his present career and longer-term financial goals.

With Geay finishing third in 2:03:59, the result also places him among the leading competitors at one of the world’s most prominent marathon events.

For Tanzania’s sporting economy, the achievement highlights how international competition can translate athletic performance into direct financial returns, while giving successful athletes an opportunity to build greater financial security from their careers.
