DAR ES SALAAM — Climate-related disruption is increasingly being treated as an economic and financial risk, with potential consequences for supply chains, energy production, transport, food prices and investment decisions.

In a speech delivered at the Green Swan conference, European Central Bank Executive Board member Frank Elderson warned that climate change and nature degradation could affect productivity, inflation and financial stability. He pointed to drought, water scarcity and extreme weather as examples of pressures that can disrupt economic activity.

Although the speech focused on Europe and international financial risks, the underlying business question is relevant to Tanzania. Agricultural producers depend on rainfall and water availability, transport operators rely on functioning roads, and manufacturers need reliable energy and supplies. Disruption in one part of a supply chain can affect businesses well beyond the location where an event occurs.

Businesses can begin managing these risks by identifying critical suppliers, reviewing insurance arrangements where available, protecting important equipment and records, and preparing alternatives for transport, water or energy interruptions.

For lenders and investors, climate exposure can also influence the long-term viability of projects. Understanding those risks before committing capital can help businesses plan for disruptions rather than respond only after losses occur.

Climate resilience is not a guarantee against disruption, but treating it as part of ordinary risk management can help businesses make more informed operational and investment decisions.
