Tanzania is seeking European investment in critical mineral processing and digital infrastructure as it looks to expand cooperation with Finland and other European markets.
The push was highlighted during the Finland leg of the EU–Tanzania Investment and Business Forum, where Tanzania presented opportunities in graphite, nickel and rare earth processing alongside digital infrastructure.
The European Union announced a €156 million package linked to cooperation with Tanzania, while Finnish financing institutions Finnvera and Finnfund indicated their willingness to consider Tanzanian investment opportunities.
The digital agenda includes data centres, broadband and submarine cable infrastructure, areas Tanzania considers important to its wider digital transformation.
During a second-day programme, Tanzanian officials visited Finland’s mineral-processing and technology facilities, including Metso’s research centre and Boliden’s Harjavalta nickel smelter. A separate delegation visited Nokia and other technology organisations to examine digital infrastructure and public-sector technology.
The visits offered Tanzanian officials exposure to European expertise in mineral processing, battery materials, digital public infrastructure and technology.
The investment drive is particularly significant as Tanzania seeks to capture more value from its mineral resources instead of relying primarily on the export of raw materials.
The EU–Tanzania roadshow subsequently moved to Italy and the Netherlands, with the European programme targeting agriculture, critical minerals, digital innovation and enabling sectors such as energy and transport.
The government is expected to use the relationships established during the roadshow to pursue financing, technology partnerships and investment in projects that can strengthen Tanzania’s industrial and digital capacity.
