Tanzania’s Exporters Need More Than Market Access to Compete Internationally

DAR ES SALAAM — Access to international markets can create growth opportunities for Tanzanian businesses, but exporters must also meet the quality, documentation, delivery, and compliance requirements demanded by overseas buyers.

Preferential trade arrangements can reduce certain trade barriers for eligible products and help exporters compete on price. However, the benefits depend on the destination market, the product concerned, applicable rules of origin and the requirements in force at the time of export. Businesses must therefore verify the specific conditions that apply to their products rather than assume that every Tanzanian product qualifies.

For agricultural producers, food processors, manufacturers and other exporters, competitiveness also depends on maintaining consistent quality, meeting delivery schedules, managing logistics costs and building reliable relationships with buyers. Smaller businesses may need support with certification, packaging, product standards and export documentation before they can serve international customers.

Adding value locally could create further opportunities. Rather than exporting only unprocessed commodities, businesses may be able to develop processed products that command higher value, provided they can meet market standards and produce at a competitive cost.

For Tanzania’s private sector, the challenge is to convert market access into sustainable export growth. Businesses that understand their target markets, invest in quality, and build dependable supply chains are better positioned to turn international demand into long-term commercial opportunities.
