DAR ES SALAAM — Trading activity on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) strengthened in the final week of October, with equity turnover rising 147.3% to TZS 41.66 billion, up from TZS 16.85 billion in the previous week.
A total of approximately 18.52 million shares changed hands across 18,746 deals between October 26 and October 30. NMB recorded the largest trading volume, while banking stocks continued to account for a significant share of market activity.
However, the increase in trading did not translate into broad market gains. Total market capitalisation fell by 2.53% to approximately TZS 38.57 trillion, while the DSE All Share Index also declined by 2.53%. The banking, finance and investment index dropped by 4.49%, highlighting the mixed performance beneath the higher turnover.
For investors, the figures demonstrate why trading activity should not be viewed in isolation. Higher turnover can indicate increased participation or substantial transactions, but it does not necessarily mean share prices are rising or that every listed company is performing well.
As November begins, investors will be watching company earnings, dividend prospects, valuations, and subsequent market reports to assess whether the increased activity represents a sustained change in market conditions.
