DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania and Türkiye are seeking to expand bilateral trade towards a US$1 billion target, with discussions focusing on investment opportunities across manufacturing, agriculture, energy, infrastructure and tourism.
The two countries are exploring ways to strengthen commercial cooperation and create opportunities for businesses to access new markets. Greater engagement could support Turkish investment in Tanzania while helping local producers identify potential buyers, suppliers and technical partners.
Manufacturing presents opportunities in areas such as textiles, construction materials and the processing of agricultural products. Investment in processing could help Tanzanian businesses move beyond selling raw materials and develop products with greater domestic value addition.
Agriculture is another potential area for cooperation. Tanzanian producers and processors could benefit from partnerships that improve production methods, processing capacity, packaging and access to export markets. Businesses supplying equipment, transport and storage services could also benefit if commercial activity expands.
Energy and infrastructure projects may create demand for engineering, construction and specialised services. However, the scale of these opportunities will depend on actual investment commitments, project approvals and procurement arrangements.
For Tanzanian businesses, the trade target provides a reason to examine the Turkish market and identify products or services that could compete internationally. Companies considering partnerships should assess quality requirements, pricing, distribution arrangements and the costs of serving overseas customers.
A target of US$1 billion should not be interpreted as trade already achieved or investment already secured. Progress will depend on whether discussions lead to commercial agreements, actual purchases and projects that move into implementation.
Government-to-business engagement can help identify barriers and build connections, but companies will still need to establish viable commercial relationships and deliver products that meet customer expectations.
The opportunity is to turn stronger diplomatic and business ties into measurable trade growth, productive investment and expanded market access for Tanzanian enterprises.
