DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania’s exports of goods and services reached approximately US$20.22 billion in the year ending August 2026, an increase of 16.4 percent, highlighting the growing contribution of merchandise exports and service industries to the economy.

Goods exports rose by 19.8 percent to US11.96 billion, supported by gold and manufactured products. Gold export earnings increased by 30.2 percent to US5.63 billion, while manufactured goods exports grew by 44.3 percent to US$2.21 billion, including iron and steel products and glassware.

Service exports also contributed to the expansion. Transport receipts increased by 26.4 percent to US$ 3.30 billion, reflecting the importance of freight and transit trade, while travel receipts reached approximately US$ 4.39 billion.

The figures show that Tanzania’s export earnings depend on several industries, from mining and manufacturing to transport and tourism. Growth in manufactured exports is particularly relevant because it points to the potential for locally processed and produced goods to reach overseas markets.

For businesses, export growth can create opportunities across supply chains. Manufacturers may require more packaging, raw materials, and transport services, while agricultural producers can benefit when local processing businesses expand their operations. Logistics companies can also gain from increased movement of goods through ports and regional transport corridors.

However, higher export earnings do not automatically translate into greater profits for every company. Businesses must account for production costs, international competition, quality standards, shipping expenses, and changes in global prices.

The figures also highlight the importance of diversifying export sources. Strong gold earnings can support the overall total, but dependence on a limited number of commodities can leave export performance exposed to global price fluctuations.

For Tanzania to capture more value from trade, businesses will need to strengthen production capacity, improve product quality and develop reliable access to international buyers. Investment in processing, logistics and skills could help more domestic firms participate in export supply chains.

The latest performance is encouraging, but sustaining growth will depend on competitiveness and the ability to expand the range of goods and services sold beyond Tanzania’s borders.
