DAR ES SALAAM — As Tanzania continues developing its natural gas resources and broader energy infrastructure, local businesses could have opportunities to participate in the supply chains that support exploration, production and industrial operations.

Companies operating in engineering, transport, equipment maintenance, construction, catering and other business services may be able to serve energy projects where they meet the required technical, safety and financial standards. Such opportunities can extend beyond the companies directly involved in extracting or processing energy resources.

However, participation is not automatic. Energy-sector contracts can require specialised expertise, reliable delivery, substantial working capital and compliance with strict procurement and safety requirements. Smaller Tanzanian businesses may need to form partnerships, upgrade their capabilities or secure appropriate certifications before competing for certain contracts.

Stronger links between major energy operators and local suppliers could help retain more spending within the domestic economy while supporting skills development and the growth of specialised service companies.

The key question is how Tanzania can turn investment in energy infrastructure into broader commercial participation. Transparent procurement processes, clear information about supplier requirements, and better preparation among local businesses will be important in determining how much value domestic firms can capture.
