Tanzania–Angola Rail Link Proposal Could Open New Questions for Regional Trade

DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania and Angola have expressed plans to improve railway connectivity between their respective ocean-facing transport corridors, potentially creating new opportunities for regional freight movement and trade.

The proposed connection would link Tanzania’s Central Corridor with Angola’s Benguela Corridor through Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The initiative was highlighted during discussions between the two countries’ presidents in late October, alongside ongoing railway development and rehabilitation efforts in the region.

If developed, stronger rail connectivity could provide businesses with additional options for moving goods across parts of central and southern Africa. Potentially affected sectors include mining, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics and freight services, although the commercial benefits would depend on the route’s eventual design, capacity, costs and operating arrangements.

For transport companies and exporters, the prospect raises questions about how rail services might complement existing road and port infrastructure. Businesses would need reliable schedules, competitive freight rates, efficient border procedures and effective coordination between railway operators before changing established supply chains.

The proposed link should not be confused with an already operational end-to-end railway service. Its impact will depend on the agreements, infrastructure work, financing and implementation needed to connect the different networks.

For Tanzania, the initiative highlights the importance of regional transport links in supporting trade. Businesses can follow developments while assessing how improved connectivity, if realised, could affect their future sourcing, distribution and export strategies.
